Happy Valentines Day! And Happy Birthday, Goldie!

Well, it’s Valentines Day! For most people, this is the day to celebrate their love with their special someone. Buy each other candy, dress up nice… Just generally make each other happy and announce to the world that they have caught the heart of this wonderful special person and they are never going to let it go. Even if it’s just a very quiet announcement.

For me, I have no special someone romantically, and I usually spend the day getting run off sidewalks by oblivious couples and so become grumpier and grumpier as the day goes on when I’m single like this year. However, this time around, I have something special to celebrate.

Goldie, my old Labrador, turns 14 years old today! She’s a Valentine pup, and you couldn’t find a sweeter disposition anywhere. Or a more bottomless stomach. (We just won’t mention that she’s more stubborn then the immovable object…) However, she also has that tongue cancer I wrote about before.

Two months ago, I wasn’t sure she would make it to this birthday.  Even a month ago, I wasn’t always convinced of it.  She’s lost so much weight! We’re feeding her constantly now to keep up! She has to be spoon fed, and she gets slobber everywhere! She also finds every mud puddle in the backyard and hops straight in it before lapping it up as well as she can with her poor cancer-riddled tongue.

Even that looks better now though!  It still looks rather pickled, but no where near so much as before. And it’s not as swollen, and there’s been very little bleeding. It really is terrifying to have to watch as your beloved pup bleeds all over the house and herself and there’s very little you can do about it. But I’m thankful she’s past that, or seemingly so anyway.

Two months ago, I was praying she’d make it to this birthday. Now she has and I am so very glad for it. There’s still a long way to go, but I think she’s gotten a good birthday gift of hope. So, here’s to another birthday! May she live to 15!

Happy Birthday, my lil Gooseberry! Sweetest pup in the world!
